John W. Winkler

John W. Winkler was one of the finest of the early twentieth century American etchers. With his etchings and art he captured the exciting worlds of twentieth century San Francisco, Chinatown, the California mountains, London, and France.

For the first time this web site brings you all the information of a complete catalog of artist John W. Winkler's works,
a biography of this twentieth century American artist, an insight into John W. Winkler’s etching techniques, the numerous museums, galleries, and collections which contain his original etching art, and a showcase of his etching artistry.

John W Winkler, artist, produced comprehensive etchings of the building of our American twentieth century San Francisco. There are etchings of the
exotic alleys of Chinatown, Telegraph Hill where the Italians perched on steep hillsides, wharves teeming with shipping, and views of the City of San Francisco by the Bay before it changed to a landscape full of tall skyscrapers.

Working directly on the plate gave John W. Winkler’s etchings an unusual freshness. The etchings depict scenes and individuals capturing the real character of the artist’s subject. Since etching is an unforgiving media, he often tossed aside a plate and started again on a new one resulting in high quality prints of varied sizes while maintaining his quality standards.

John W. Winkler’s Christmas cards and Bread and Butter etchings have only been seen by lucky recipients. His Bread and Butter thank you notes are rarely found offered to the public.

Etchings of France and London record his time spent there during their early twentieth century history. This work captures the essence of these scenes by concentrating on everyday occupations instead of famous landmarks.

John W. Winkler preferred to print his own work. He inspected and signed all his work unless otherwise indicated.

All etching prints are originals and were printed and signed by John W. Winkler during his lifetime.
