The numerous and varied shops in Chinatown fascinated Winkler although he had many close calls as the Tong Wars were going on between rival gangs. There existed a tremendous variety in the types of shops: laundries, goods from China, opium dens, delicatessens -- with openings right on the crowded alleys.
